I was taken by the simplicity of this painting at first and thought that the work contained elements of great value worth mentioning. The shading and depth of value within the pant legs shows a well developed sense of texture that with a litttle more work can become exceptional. The overall composition is excellent with the center of interest located just off to left of center. I also like how the major areas of the painting do not detract from the center focus of old man and cat.
I do think that there needs more work on making a lighter touch to the flowers in the background, a little more character to the foreground walkway and some dimensional work on the large stones ringing the arches.
